Editor’s Notes

Greetings dear readers,

Thank you for reading our August issue. It's a doozie with six poems and a review. This month we give you space to reflect on loss, on how to cope with the violence of current times and on our need to make a lasting mark.

In addition to the poetry, you will also find our first review in some time and we hope the reviews continue throughout the year. In her in-depth review of Magyarázni by Helen Hajnoczky, Romanian-Canadian writer, translator and scholar Diana Manole discusses the role of second generation postmemory and mixed cultural allegiance, and the role of Hungarian and visual poetry within the book as forms of displacement, anxiety and longing for something familiar.

I invite readers of Bywords.ca to send reviews or queries to amanda@bywords.ca. We are looking for unpublished reviews of between 500 to 1000 words on recent Canadian poetry titles, both perfect-bound books and chapbooks. I hope this thoughtful review encourages you to read Magyarázni.

Thanks to our selection committee this month:

Wes Babcock
Robert Martin Evans
Jason Lamantia
Anne LeDressay
Tanya Mead
Kemisha Newman
Leslie Smith
Carol A. Stephen
Rob Thomas

At this time we must also say goodbye to Anne LeDressay, who has been a dedicated selection committee member for nearly three years. We wish her well in her future endeavours.

If you have comments, questions, suggestions or a taboo snack to offer, please contact me at amanda@bywords.ca.
